Okay, I don't get mad very easily.... but Im mad!
I had stories posted up at fanfiction.net. Two weeks ago, I couldn't sign on. It said "account deleted" and all my stories were gone too. Without an account/user name, just try to ask them a question... it is impossible. So, I used another account name, asked if they deleted me by mistake. It was actually what I thought must have happened as they were doing a bunch of upgrades and things.
I waited and waited for an answer, then I saw that at the "support area," they'd marked my question "closed." I reopened it, and noted they hadn't answered my question. Today, here is what I got from them:
"
Account in question has been closed by the abuse department.
FanFiction.Net Support"
Being stupidly tenacious, I've "unclosed" the support question again, and asked what the alleged abuse is. How does deleting an account, without telling the writer what their supposed infraction was, act as a deterrent to whatever conduct they didn't like? I don't get it. Moreover, don't they respect their writers and readers? How much trouble would it be for them to send a warning email advising what it is that is wrong/unsuitable to their site, and letting you know you're going to be deleted in X number of days unless you fix it? Their site is very automated, so I'm sure it would be a snap. Plus, hello, wiping out a lot of work both on reader and writer side of the equation, should not be so arbitrary!
Curious, I googled the issue of deletion at ff.net, and found various petitions to stop them from doing it. Even more curious, I found they close your account just because someone complains about it and that the reasons can be very silly.
Anyway, I'm not going to post there anymore, but I'd like to know... anyone else had this trouble there before? I have heard years back, a lot of people had problems with slash and adult stories getting deleted, and then AFF was born. But when I looked at the TOS recently (I joined this year), I did not see that slash violates their rules, and I had non-slash stuff up too... so I really don't know what the problem was, and lack of knowledge is frustrating.
Anyway - DELETION AT FANFICTION.NET? Tell me your stories about it...
